Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in the garden adjacent to number 1 Orchard Piece, Blackmore, in advance of the construction of a three bedroom house. The evaluation was undertaken as a part of a condition placed on planning consent by Brentwood Borough Council (11/01055/FUL) on the advice of the Essex County Council Historic Environment Management team (ECC HEM). The proposed development lies immediately to the northeast of the historic core of Blackmore village, by the road leading from the village centre to Fingrith Hall, the site of an early medieval manor enclosed by a large moat. Two evaluation trenches were excavated within the footprint of the new building by a machine fitted with a toothless bucket, under the supervision of an archaeologist. One of them, measuring 5.8m by 1.5m by 0.5m deep was aligned northwest-southeast, while the other was positioned at a 35º angle to the fist one and measured 6m by 1.5m by 0.6m deep. They revealed a stratigraphy that consisted of 0.17-0.2m of dark grey brown soft sandy silt topsoil, overlaying a 0.3-0.4m thick layer of mid yellow brown firm clayey silt, which in turn was underlain by natural deposits that comprised light brown orange firm silty clay. No archaeological remains were identified. The evaluation suggests that the proposed development will not have any impact upon the archaeological record.
