Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out on construction of an annexe to Secret Garden, formerly West End House, an 18th-century house which lies within a medieval moated enclosure, part of whose earthworks are visible in the garden to the rear. The watching brief recorded wholesale truncation down to the natural chalky clay by a modern outbuilding. It is thought that all remains of the moated enclosure have been disturbed along a 30-40m strip along the Drury Lane frontage, although earthworks clearly survive in gardes to the rear.
