Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring and excavation was carried out in 2008-9 during topsoil stripping of a 9.5ha area in the north-west of Bulls Lodge Quarry, Boreham. The western part of this area contained scattered, poorply-preserved prehisitoric featuires, including late Neolithic and early Bronze Age pits, and an Iron Age or Roman cremation burial. Two medieval ditched enclosures in the north-east of the area were excavated in detail. These area dated to the late 12th-mid 13th centuries and are interpreted as a farmstead. The western enclosure contained a pond and was probably for coralling livestock, while the eastern enclosure contained timber buildings and an area of hardstanding typical of a farmyard. A notable find was a silver penny of Stephen dated to 1137-53. Only the southern half of the farmstead was recorded and further remains are thought to extend beyond the northern limit of the site.
