Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was conducted on land at Common Road, Sissinghurst, Kent (NGR: TQ 78935 37798). The work was carried out between the 19th and 23rd November for Diocesan Architectural Services, on behalf of their client Sissinghurst CE Primary School, Kent. Nineteen trenches were excavated to a cumulative length of 380 metres in advance of the construction of a new 5 classroom primary school with nursery, landscaping and creation of car parking, in order to assess the archaeological potential of the site. The land has been fields since at least the late eighteenth century, and lies slightly to the northwest of the historic medieval core of Sissinghurst itself. Within all trenches the topsoil/subsoil deposits overlay the natural geology which comprised silty clays indicated on British Geological Survey maps to be Tunbridge Wells Sands. This was encountered at a maximum height of 82.52m AOD in the east of the site falling away to 79.51m OD in the south. No archaeological features were encountered and no material recovered dating to earlier than the transitional/early post-medieval period. The sequence was cut by a system of land drains and wastewater drainage service trenches, a number of other features were identified that appeared to be natural in origin.
