Abstract:
Historic building recording and an archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Magnolia House and Acacia House during conversion into four residential units. Magnolia House forms part of a large property dating to c. 1700 and was converted into two dwellings in the 1820s. At this date further bedroom accommodation was provided in the roofspace. In the early 20th century a new kitchen was added to the rear of the house. Acacia House was constructed in 1868 partially on the site of an earlier building. Its 'annex' incorporates some fabric from at least one, and possibly two, earlier buildings. At the rear of the house are mid 20th-century outbuildings. A record of the houses was prepared following stripping out of modern finishes and fittings. A record of the boundary wall was also made. A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at the rear of Acacia House where there was potential for buried archaeological deposits of Roman date to survive. All exposed deposits and features were of post-medieval date - any groundworks were not deep enough to expose any earlier remains. A brick-lined well was exposed, as was a cobbled surface predating the 'annex' to Acacia House.
