Abstract: |
Northamptonshire Archaeology undertook a desk-based assessment, watching brief, evaluation and open area excavation at the site of the former Sheffield Assay Office on behalf of Rose Project Services and their clients Cordwell Properties (Portobello) Ltd. In the 19th century the site was occupied by a firm of cutlers, Francis Newton and Sons, and court housing - both of which were cleared in the second quarter of the 20th century prior to the building of the Assay Office. As a result of the work a wide-ranging body of cartographic, documentary and excavated evidence has helped build a cohesive picture of the cutlery works and houses during their lifespan. |
