Abstract:
During the summer of 2011 an archaeological excavation was undertaken in a 350ha area of farmland between Swinford and Lutterworth in Leicestershire (SP 575 815 centre) in advance of the proposed construction of an 11 turbine wind farm. Fieldwork was carried out over a five week period between July 12 and August 12 by staff of University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS). In all, four c.60m by c.30m areas were stripped over the proposed footprints of four Turbines to investigate possible early Roman features found during a programme of archaeological trial trenching undertaken by ULAS in 2010. In one turbine area a complex sequence of possible late Iron Age and early Roman settlement was uncovered. The earliest features were a series of parallel, east to west orientated ditches dating to the mid to late 1st century AD. These were replaced during the first half of the 2nd century by a series of small rectangular enclosures were enclosed by a substantial ditch which could be traced running north-north-west to south-south-east across the western side of the site before turning east at its southern end. Four structures were found within the excavated area, including two probable roundhouses and a raised stone platform within a kerbed ditch. This was possible an external working surface, possibly a threshing floor. Ceramic dating suggests that all occupation had ceased by the mid 2nd century AD. Isolated Roman cremations and field ditches were located in other turbine bases to the east and south.
