Abstract:
Albion Archaeology was commissioned to undertake the program of archaeological trial trench evaluation. Trenches were positioned so as to assess archaeological potential and also to test for the presence of possible building remains Archaeological remains survived in a form of three post-holes and irregular shallow pit. These are likely associated in some way with the buildings shown on the 1779 map or post-date these buildings. The pit was encountered in an area where one of the buildings shown on the Enclosure Award map would have been located and is believed to post-date the removal of the building's remains. All the revealed archaeological remains within the trenches seem to be stratigraphically earlier than deposit of buried subsoil that was encountered in Trenches 1, 2 and 6. This activity, in turn, likely removed a possible building's remains that was shown on the 1779 Enclosure Award map. The extraction activity is interpreted as being associated with levelling activity or quarrying for mudstone in the area. Whilst the former activity would likely have been associated with de-construction of the 18th century building, the latter one would be regarded as related to brick-making industry.
