Abstract: |
In August 2011 an archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out at 15 Whitecroft Road, Meldreth, Cambridgeshire to inform proposals for the development of the site. Eight archaeologically supervised trenches were excavated within the proposed development. All areas were cleaned to determine the presence of archaeological remains and the spoil heaps were visually scanned looking for the presence of archaeological artefacts, but none were recovered. Trench 1 and trenches 3-8 contained no significant archaeological remains, whilst trench 2 contained two undated postholes. A raised track way was noted running along the southern boundary of the site and is possibly the remnants of the embankment for the early 20th century Meldreth Tramway. A structure in the southeast corner of the site was also noted and is believed to be a boiler house linked with the Second World War Nissen huts located directly southeast of the site. |
