Abstract:
Between June and September 2010 Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd carried out a watching brief and historic building recording at Hilton Hall, Hilton, Cambridgeshire. The watching brief uncovered the remains of a dark, organic, amorphous feature across the southern part of the site along with sections of brick wall and a well thought to be associated with an earlier stable block, initially pictured on the 1887 OS map. While to the north of the site a further brick wall dating to the 17th/18th century and the remains of a cobbled surface were exposed. The historic fabric that was exposed during the building works consisted of early 17th century brickwork in the southeast corner, which was covered in two layers of lime based plaster. The bricks in the eastern extension were seen to be of very poor quality, and possibly of 18th century date.
