Abstract: |
Archaeological field survey: Burnham Beeches is itself a relict archaeological landscape, with pollards and coppiced beeches providing evidence for former woodland management practices. Over one hundred individual archaeological features were observed during the survey ranging in date from the Iron Age to the 20th century. Most features fall into the category of land management, quarrying or World War II activity. Because of the intensive use of the Beeches during the war years followed by a major re-constitution of the landscape afterwards, many slighter features, such as saw pits or charcoal burners yards have been destroyed. The management and mitigation of the surviving archaeological record in relation to the Burnham Beeches Management Plan 2005-2010 is considered in some detail in this report. |
