Abstract:
Aerial survey reveals cropmarks of unexcavated and undated field systems either side of the site. The excavation was located to the southern half of the area evaluated in 2006. Two field systems were revealed, one aligned north-south (undated), and one north-west to south-east (LIA to early Roman). Earlier occupation was indicated by the presence of Neolithic flints and Bronze age pottery within the ditch fills. Less Roman finds were uncovered than in the evaluation suggesting the occupation was more concentrated to the north and the excavated area was more likely part of the farmed fields. The most remarkable find was a group of small fragments of Roman coloured glass - the raw materials for enamelling - from the fill of an early Roman ditch. This discovery which will be published elsewhere, has implications for local enamelling and metal-working.
