Abstract:
The trial-trenching evaluation established/confirmed the presence, nature, and survival of Iron Age, Roman, Medieval, post-medieval and Modern remains. The significance of these varied on each site but at least four areas were identified of particularly complex archaeological activity. These included the survival of two scove or clamp kilns, an area of medieval occupation, a complex and potentially long-lived settlement, originating in the Middle Iron Age and continuing into the early Roman period, and a previously unknown area of occupation situated between Belstead Hall Farm and New Hall. With the exception of the Late Iron Age - Early Roman settlement at Site 8, and hint of nearby prehistoric activity at Site 5, the landscape investigated during the course of the fieldwork contains very little evidence for prehistoric, Roman or Saxon occupation. This is possibly a reflection of the heavy clay soils, in contrast to the free-draining soils of the Chelmer Valley to the south. However, evidence for late medieval and early post-medieval activity was more widespread, no doubt reflecting the wooded nature of much of the area in the medieval period and its subsequent emparkment in the Tudor and Stuart periods.
