Abstract: |
Archaeological fieldwork was carried out at St Leonards, Fryerning in advance of, and during, a series of proposed building and landscaping works. St Leonards was built in 1804 (EHER 26540), close to the site of an earlier property depicted on the 1777 Chapman and Andre map of Essex as Brick House. The earliest recovered artefacts were a flint scraper of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date and a few sherds of 13th to 14th century pottery found as residual elements in later contexts. There was no evidence to firmly link the site with that of a medieval priory recorded in 1611 (EHER 19222). A clay extraction pit excavated to the north of the present house and the remains of a possible T-shaped boundary ditch junction to the east, are both likely to be 18th century contemporaries of Brick House. Foundations for a demolished part of the 1804 house were exposed that contained reused bricks of Tudor or early 17th century date. Contemporary with the 1804 house was an exterior yard, a brick-lined well and possibly a set of brick steps to the south of the house and. Later foundations were comprised of brick and concrete and represent later 19th and early 20th century alterations to the north side of the building which were demolished in 1935. Also of later 19th and early 20th century date were a number of drainage features and the partially exposed remains of brick outbuildings to the west. |
