Abstract: |
A short programme of archaeological recording was undertaken at Biggar Gasworks following the discovery of a circular lattice-like structure at the bottom of the smaller of two gas holders during remedial works to the interior. The gasworks was built in 1839 and the smaller of the two gas holders is the original. It consists of an upper section running on early triform lattice guides into a semi-subterranean water tank, this enabled consistent gas pressure in the mains. The upper section was rebuilt in the 1970s. Most of the features identified are likely original features including the side wall with inbuilt grooves or guides, the circular lattice structure of the base of the water tank, the 'T'-section iron plates, and pipes. Repairs seen probably took place during the rebuilding of the upper gas holder in the 1970s. |
