Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by the Environmental Design Partnership on behalf of Barwood Homes Limited to undertake building recording and archaeological watching brief at no. 31a Hitchin Street and The Maltings, Park Street, Baldock Hertfordshire, centred on OS NGR TL 24335 33789. The work was required by the Local Planning Authority as a condition of planning permission for the demolition of some of the buildings, refurbishment of others and redevelopment of the site. No. 31a Hitchin Street is listed Grade II. Although none of the other buildings are listed, the site lies within a Conservation Area. The building recording was carried out in accordance with English Heritage's Level 3. The earliest documentary reference to a malting in Hitchin Street is late 18th century in date. Five timber-framed buildings with brick footings within the site appear to be 18th century in date. In the 19th century these buildings were altered; one became a malt kiln and new floors were inserted into all of the buildings. A new building was built on the Hitchin Street frontage in the early 19th century and another was built on the Park Street frontage in the late 19th century with a barley kiln. Malting ceased on the site during the second decade of the 20th century. The watching brief uncovered a number of 19th century wall footings. Levelling of the site in the 19th century may have removed earlier archaeological features.
