Abstract: |
In January 2008, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted an archaeological desk-based assessmentof land at South Quay, opposite Boal Quay, Boal Street, King's Lynn, Norfolk (NGR TF 6172 1966) in advance of proposals for redevelopment of the site. There is no evidence for prehistoric or Roman activity in the area. It is thought that the late Saxon settlement was small due to the limited archaeological evidence so far discovered. Earlty medieval activity was substantial in the area around St Margaret's Church and the Saturday Market Place. The port became one of the largest in Medieval England, transforming the history of the town. The port declined in the post-medieval period, but King's Lynn still prospered. The archaeological evidence indicates that the land on the site was reclaimed from the river in the late medieval period. Early cartographic sources indicate that the site was developed from the late 17th century. By 1887, parts of two granaries were constructed within the site boundaries, the foundations of which will have truncated remains across much of the central part of the site. The 1970s construction of ten grain silos on the site will also have caused ground disturbance. It is likely that two areas, in the south-east and west of the site, have remainned undisturbed. A geotechnical investigation found made ground across the site, extending to a depth of 0.70-4.00m+ below ground level. The water table in the south-east of the site was found to be fairly high, suggesting some potential for waterlogged deposits. |
