Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation involving the supervised mechanical excavation of two trial trenches was carried out by PRO Archaeology Services in advance of the construction of a proposed new detached house and ancillary garage (Planning reference: TM/07/02163) on land at Tudor Barn, Long Mill Lane, St Mary's Platt, Sevenoaks, Kent (NGR: TQ 62220 56510). The evaluation revealed a stratigraphic sequence of natural geology overlaid by buried topsoil and made ground deposits. The earliest archaeological features were seen cut into the natural brickearth and consisted of four linear features and a post hole in trench 2 and one truncated linear feature and two post holes in trench 1. All of the dating evidence retrieved from the features was dated to the medieval and post medieval periods. Modern disturbance seen at the eastern end of trench 1 indicated extensive buried modern waste materials such as a steel drum and cables. Other buried waste materials were seen in Trench 2 and recorded in the sections.
