Abstract:
Building recording was carried out at Fox and Goose Cottages at the south-western edge of Elmswell parish. The building was formerly a farmhouse with at least 112 acres. The 1814 enclosure map shows it with a similar outline as today, in the corner of a complex of buildings labelled 'Fox and Goose Farm'. The outbuildings were demolished later when new yards and a brick farmhouse were built c.300 metres to the north-east (Elmswell Park Stud). The 1843 tithe map shows the old farmhouse behind trees. By 1886 it had been sub-divided into tenements one of which was the Fox and Goose Pub. The building is a typical timber-framed, rendered farmhouse of the early-17th century with a hall to the east of a large axial chimney and a parlour to the west. The 17th century 'lobby entrance' opens onto the latter's newel stair. In other respects the internal layout has been altered, with much of the historic fabric hidden on the ground storey, though more is visible on the first floor. The oak frame is high quality, with tall-sectioned ceiling joists and deeply chamfered principals with 'lamb's tongue' stops. The frame shows mid-17th century remodelling including the raising of the external walls by 1.3 metres, increasing headroom on the upper storey. At 6.4 metres wide the farmhouse is Yeoman quality and largely intact. Several internal doors of the 17th and 18th centuries remain in situ. The render is likely to conceal additional contemporary fabric and possibly evidence of painted decoration.
