Abstract: |
A condition attached to planning permission for the construction of a manège to the south of the existing farm complex at 157 Bedford Road, Wootton, Bedfordshire required the implementation of a programme of archaeological field evaluation. Archaeological observations during building works in August 2011 recorded a possible wall foundation or sleeper wall to the north of the house. The evaluation revealed the remains of early to middle Roman period, (boundary ditches, a gully, and two pits) plus two post-medieval quarry pits, and an undated but possibly Roman feature. This was followed up by a watching brief. All groundworks relating to the construction were monitored, these comprised the excavation of footings, and ground reduction for the insertion of floor slabs. Although there was no requirement to record the standing structure of the listed house, some changes to the building have been incidentally documented in 'working shots' taken by the archaeologists attending groundworks. |
