Abstract:
Following evaluation, an archaeological excavation was undertaken on land at 12-13 Irish Street, Whitehaven, Cumbria. The excavation, although not establishing a coherent ground plan of the entire brewery complex, recorded various elements of the south-eastern part of the 'Low Brewery' which had its origins in the 18th Century. These comprised parts of a range of four sandstone buildings arranged around a cobbled courtyard accessed from the west by a narrow lane. Within the buildings a number of rooms containing a variety of features were recorded. These included a brick-built furnace, a series of tanks constructed from slate, a large subterranean brick built tank - possibly a fermentation vat, a casking area/barrel store and tiled, mortared or flagged floors within various cellared storage areas.
