Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 21 hectares, was carried out at the proposed site of a solar park at The Hollies, Burgh-le-Marsh. To the north of the site a square enclosure with internal divisions and numerous discrete features corresponds with a cropmark which has been interpreted as of possible medieval date. In the south-east corner of the site a plethora of linear and curvilinear anomalies locates a series of enclosures, previously unknown, thought to be indicative of an area of settlement of presumed Roman/early post-Roman date. Linear anomalies to the south-west of the site are thought to be due to field boundaries shown on early 20th century Ordnance Survey mapping and are considered to be of limited archaeological potential. The survey has identified two areas of obvious and significant archaeological potential to the north-east and south-east corners of the site. The archaeological potential of the remainder of the site is considered to be low. |
