Abstract:
Headland Archaeology was commissioned by Aithrie Estates to undertake a programme of archaeological works comprising historic building recording and monitoring of ground works at Hopetoun Home Farm, South Queensferry. The development comprised the conversion of a single building that formed part of the Hopetoun Home Farm estate. The works included the excavation of a 50m long service trench and an attenuation tank trench in addition to a series of shorter service trenches and ground works around the perimeter of the building. The building survey suggested that the building was part of the original Home Farm constructed c.1725 and had subsequently undergone a number of alterations throughout its history. The monitoring of ground works revealed deep deposits of made ground to the south of the workshop with evidence for an earlier stone cobble road layer 2.5m below the modern surface. No significant archaeological features or artefacts pre-dating the workshop were identified during this programme of works.
