Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted for Anglian Water Services Ltd ahead of proposed water main replacement for Middleton Quarry. The archaeological potential of the site was thought to be reasonably high, lying close to a number of previously identified cropmark features of probably medieval date. The results revealed an arrangement of intercutting ditches and pits dating to the Romano-British and medieval periods. Although, there was no direct connection with cultural occupation on the site, evidence of Romano-British and Early Saxon artefacts suggests that historical activity had occurred within the vicinity of the site. Five 20m long trenches were excavated, all of which produced archaeologically noteworthy features and deposits. |
