Abstract:
An Archaeological Evaluation by Window Sampling was carried out at land to the rear of 7-11 Cathedral Street in Norwich. This was commissioned for Building Partnerships Ltd by Chaplin Farrant Limited and undertaken by NPS Archaeology as part of the pre-application process for planning permission to construct flats at the site. The site lies in the precinct of a medieval Franciscan monastery founded in the 13th century. Analysis of the two window samples examined indicated that below a modern ground level of c.5m OD, a depth of c.2.90m of deposits of anthropomorphic origin were present across the site. These deposits overlay geological deposits of sands and gravels present at the site at depths of c.2.6 to c. 2.90m below current ground level (2.40m to 2.10m OD). Groundwater was present at c.2.10m OD. The earliest significant deposit at the site was a peat located at the base of the deposit sequence. Possibly discontinuous in occurrence, its presence indicated wet, possibly waterlogged conditions were present on the site at some point in the past. Overlying this peat were predominantly silt and clays deposits, noticeably damp with few inclusions and of unknown date. These might be associated with garden or horticultural activity at the site as documentary evidence suggests the area was open and possibly cultivated in the late 18th century.
