Abstract:
Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake trial trenching on land to the west of Shefford Road, Shefford, Bedfordshire. Earlier Heritage Assessment and geophysical survey suggested that there was prehistoric activity in the eastern part of the proposed development area. The geophysical survey identified three enclosures and possible pits. The trial trenching targeted areas of archaeology as well as 'blank' zones. To the east there are enclosures dating to the middle to late Iron Age, perhaps the 1st century BC, while to the west there is a small enclosure that spans the 1st century BC to the mid 1st century AD.. Remnants of medieval furrows were also found. There was some modern activity including a rubbish pit, areas of tree disturbance and an extensive network of field drains.
