Abstract:
This evaluation provided evidence of the enclosure of what was probably a pre-enclosure field system during the 17th or 18th century. Two north-south ditches were excavated to reveal stakeholes along the base showing that the fields had been enclosed, possibly to contain grazing cattle. It is interesting to note that the present field boundaries cut this earlier field system. The new boundaries were probably established as part of the 18th century enclosing of the fens. The area was also affected by the various Parlimentary Acts to drain and improve the area in the 18th and 19th centuries. This process meant that arable farming took over as the main farming use in fen lands.
