Abstract: |
Planning permission was granted for the construction of a new visitor centre and associated landscaping, visitor facilities and car parking at Wrest Park, Silsoe, Bedfordshire. A condition (No. 7) was attached to the permission requiring a programme of archaeological work. Wrest Park and its gardens are a Scheduled Ancient Monument; Monitoring of the groundworks revealed features and deposits associated with the 19th-century walled garden. A large brick culvert revealed in the NW corner of the garden is likely to have been constructed during the mid 19th century and would have supplied hot water to heat glasshouses depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1881. A brick tank, probably constructed during the 20th century to hold liquid was revealed in the eastern half of the garden. |
