Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted for NPS South East Ltd ahead of proposed redevelopment of the Thetford Academy (formerly the Rosemary Musker School) on Croxton Road, Thetford. The site is located c.1.7km north of the historic town of Thetford. The site was evaluated in two separate phases of archaeological fieldwork. Phase I (presented in report BAU2827a) examined two trenches within the school grounds. During this work a single archaeological feature interpreted as a possible quarry of post-medieval date was identified. In Phase II, the subject of this report, six trenches (Trenches 3-8) located in an arable field north of the school were evaluated. Each trench measured 30m by 1.80m in plan and was positioned within the footprint of the proposed development. The evaluation recorded a small number of archaeological features consisting mostly of ditches, as well as a post-hole and features of probable natural origin. Evaluation Trenches 4 and 5 contained no remains of archaeological interest. Geological deposits at the site comprised sands and gravels. The most significant archaeological features revealed by the evaluation were six ditches, three of which lay in the west of the site with the remainder broadly in the centre of the evaluated area. They all appeared to share approximate north-south alignments. It proved difficult to assign even a broad date range to these features, the only artefacts recovered from these features being two iron objects from a small ditch or similar feature in Trench 3 at the west of the site. It is considered possible and indeed likely that these ditches represent more than one period of activity. Based on appearance and location some at least might date to the late prehistoric period, and it is suggested that all had been supplanted by enclosure in the 18th to 19th centuries. The evaluation also recorded a post-hole of post-medieval date and a small number of features considered to be of natural origin. |
