Abstract: |
This interim report covers the initial stages of the Scordale Lead Mines project (an English Heritage and MOD partnership project) up to the end of January 2007. The specific purpose of the report is to outline the current understanding of the site for management and conservation purposes as well as to summarize the progress of the project. The report identifies four principal areas of threat, all on the valley floor adjacent to the Scordale and Hilton Becks. These include an area of Bronze Age settlement and field systems, the processing area associated with the Hilton and Murton lead mines, a former mine and later lime kiln close to Lowfield Hush and the remains of a dressing mill. These four key areas have been subject to detailed ground survey and the archaeological features in the broader survey area have been transcribed from aerial photographs. Specific areas of erosion are highlighted in the report and potential targets for excavation and sampling are suggested. Further fieldwork and research will be undertaken and a full analytical report produced in due course. |
