Abstract: |
January to April 2003. Oxford Archaeology carried out a programme of fieldwalking and commissioned a geophysical survey in advance of a proposed development at Luton Hoo, Hyde, Bedfordshire. The fieldwalking took place over an area of approximately 60 hectares and the geophysical surveys took place on five areas of land with a combined area of 120 hectares. The fieldwalking revealed a high density prehistoric flint scatter that is indicative of prehistoric activity and should be considered significant. Lower amounts of medieval, post-medieval and modern material were also recovered. The geophysical survey took place in two parts. The first, reconnaissance gradiometer survey, was carried out across all areas and detected 74 isolated anomalies. A detailed gradiometer survey, of 30 hectares, targeting these anomalies revealed a random pattern of isolated anomalies, part of a rectilinear enclosure and evidence of widespread recent utilisation of the landscape including modern services and buildings. |
