Abstract: |
Full excavation was carried out by Archaeological Services in 2007, with intermittent monittoring after that date, in areas between the Market Place and Blossomgate, Ripon, that would be affected by construction of a new supermarket. Large areas of the total site were already at foundation depth for the new development and were not excavated to a depth that would affect archaeological remains. Affected areas were limited to the east, south and southwest edges of the development, together with some internal drainage. A number of small discrete post-medieval rubbish pits were identified towards the east in an area that was not excavated as far as the natural. Along the southern edge of the site a number of large intercutting quarry pits of late medieval / early post medieval date were identified, together with an undated (but stratigraphically later) horse burial. Two post-medieval wells were identified in the southwest corner of the site. |
