Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer and earth resistance) survey, covering approximately 21 hectares, was carried out at the site of the deserted medieval settlement of Hanging Grimston, a scheduled ancient monument. The survey covered all of the monument but also extended to the south and east of the scheduled area and was carried out as part of a wider research project investigating the site through analytical earthwork survey. Anomalies corresponding with the upstanding earthworks have been identified by both remote sensing surveys. These anomalies are interpreted as possible buildings and farmsteads relating to the medieval settlement. In addition the magnetometer survey has identified two areas of archaeological activity as indicated by two groups of enclosures. To the west of the site a group of nine enclosures appended either side of a north/south aligned trackway are clearly identified. To the east of the site (and partly extending beyond the scheduled area) another group of at least four enclosures are also identified. Both these areas of archaeological activity are previously unknown and are thought to indicate a separate phase of activity which predates the medieval settlement. |
