Abstract: |
A small scale site reduction took place to provide a firm foundation for a concrete raft foundation. This revealed the truncated remains of a former stable/cow house which is recorded on the 1st Ed OS map of 1856 but went into disuse by the end of the 19th century with the construction of the adjacent Cawton Hall. The building measured c.11 x 4m and consisted of 2 'rooms' accessed by doorways still insitu in the Hall's garden boundary wall an extant relict of the stable/cow house's east wall. Dividing the northern 'room' was a divided by two east-west aligned stone troughs which spanned the width of the building and extended beneath the east wall. The troughs will remain in situ beneath the new stable as will most of the former stable/cow house's floor. |
