Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out by Archaeological Services Durham University at White House farm, Stokesley in December 2010, prior to redevelopment. The site lies outside thwe town and has remained as agricultural land since records began. An Iron Age enclosure is recorded within the proposed development area in a catalogue of such sites. However, the name given for this enclosure suggests that the entry has arisen from an incorrect grid reference and the enclosure is actually located somewhere else. However, a second undisputed iron Age enclosure is located just to the north of the proposed development area. Fieldwalking in this area has recovered stray finds dating from the Neolithic to the Saxon periods. There is therefore a potential for remains up to the Saxon period to be present. Geophysical suervey followed by trial trenching was recommended. |
