Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering 7 hectares was carried out on agricultural land off Bawtry Road, Harworth to inform the determination of a planning application for a proposed housing development. The survey has identified linear anomalies caused by soil-filled ditches forming part of a 'brickwork' field system of likely Iron Age or early Roman date thereby confirming the cropmark data. A sinuous anomaly, again corresponding with a known cropmark, corresponds to the location of the county boundary between Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire which may have been established in the early medieval period. On the basis of the geophysical survey the archaeological potential of the site is considered to be moderate. |
