Abstract:		 Four trial trenches, totalling 80m in length, and four 3x3m test pits were excavated to evaluate the archaeological potential of the site in advance of redevelopment. Two of the test pits contained Victorian brick walls; these corresponded with the footprint of Hyde House shown on late-19th- and 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps. An early post-medieval linear feature was also identified, cut by the Victorian walls. It could be a foundation trench relating to an earlier building on the site. The subsurface deposits in several of the trenches had been heavily disturbed by 19th- and 20th-century building activity and the demolition of Hyde House in the 1970s.
