Abstract:
Historic Environment Projects (HE Projects), Cornwall Council undertook an archaeological watching brief on behalf of the St. Just and District Trust during ground works associated with the replacement of the existing Plen Hut (the former St. Just telephone exchange) with the Knut, a store, resource and administration/changing/meeting building to service events within the Plen-an-Gwary in St. Just. The site was situated immediately to the west of the Plen-an-Gwary a medieval playing place which is a scheduled monument. The work recorded an absence of shallow bedrock across most of the site indeed most of the trenches were cut through 'made' ground consisting of dumped topsoil and domestic midden and building material that in the south east and east, was not bottomed. It is uncertain why this may be the case, but may be the result of remodelling the Plen-an-Gwary and landscaping the surrounding area in the 1870s or it is also just possible that this material infills a ditch surrounding the exterior of the Plen-an-Gwary. The work demonstrated that the ground had been heavily disturbed since the 19th century by various drainage and utility schemes greatly reducing the chance for survival of any earlier archaeological features. It is estimated that at least 60% of the site had been trenched, either in the past, or to install services relating to or required by the current development. It was concluded that the development had very little or no impact on any significant buried remains and that the site represents a genuinely archaeologically blank area within St. Just, despite its proximity to the core of the settlement.
