Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of shallow holes in advance of the installation of survey markers at three sites around Orkney: Earl's Palace, Birsay, Brough of Birsay, and Unstan Chambered Cairn, Stenness. Two of the holes at the Earl's Palace required the removal of whin dust or gravel, revealing in situ flagstone floors beneath. The stones were not disturbed since the survey points here were to be marked by metal studs installed between stones. All the other holes disturbed only turf and topsoil and revealed no features or deposits of archaeological significance. |
