Abstract:
HE Projects (Cornwall Council) was commissioned by the Design and Maintenance Consultancy, Cornwall Council to undertake an archaeological investigation, necessary to fulfil a planning condition for development on the northern side of Sir James Smith's School at Camelford (NGR SX 1023 8384). The excavations revealed ceremonial and settlement sites of Late Iron Age date (c200 BC-AD 50). The development (of a Synthetic Sports Pitch) affected 7500 square metres and further targeted excavation was undertaken in the area of the new Sports Pitch to the north of this. Sites include two circular ditched enclosures with evidence of external banks (Enclosures A and F), a roundhouse (a ditched post-ring structure C), an adjoining enclosed metalworking site (Ring-gully D), and an area containing a section of field enclosure (Field system E). Artefactual evidence indicate a Late Iron Age date, with some residual Middle Bronze Age activity (c1500-1000 BC) in the area. The features are grouped around the eastern and southern edge of a large rectilinear enclosure (35m by 30m) identified by an earlier geophysical survey (GSB 2007). The artefacts are notable, with a large number of stone objects and evidence of structured deposition of pottery. The first archive report summarises the results of the fieldwork. A further report (2009) summarises the sites found to the south of the school, including a wall and ditches of medieval/post medieval date, plus a number of pits, two of which produced Late Neolithic grooved ware pottery. The project will be published fully in Cornish Archaeology.
