Abstract: |
Previous studies of these buildings and their surviving crucks had suggested an early fourteenth-century date for the east and west crucks, currently located in Old Hall Fold, and a late sixteenth-century date for the south cruck, currently located in Taunton Hall. This study was unable to find suitable timbers with which to date reliably the east and west trusses, although the smoke-blackened purlins attached to them dated to the late-fifteenth or early-sixteenth centuries. They may well represent the same phase of work on the building as the construction of the south truss, which utilises timber felled in AD 1495-6. |
