Abstract: |
The main trusses were sampled after the completion of conservation and repair work in December 1996. Twelve of the sixteen timbers sampled were subsequently dated, but they formed two contemporaneous groups which did not crossmatch with each other. This suggests that the timber for some of the principal rafters came from a different source than the other timbers in the structure. Whilst many of the timbers had sapwood on them, in all except one case, this disintegrated on sampling. Dendrochronological analysis of the trusses in the main range of this multi-phase building have dated this roof structure to the period AD 1554-1576. This accords with the views of the RCHME, and adds to the information available about the timing of adoption of this style of roof in north London. |
