Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological works consisting of evaluation trenching, strip and record and open-area excavation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd prior to the development of land at Ruskin Avenue, Wrenthorpe, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Archaeological remains consisted of two Romano-British possibly livestock enclosures; a circular enclosure and a segmented curvilinear enclosure bisected by a ditch. These dated to between the 2nd and 3rd century AD. Although there was no evidence of internal structures to the enclosures, a moderate amount of pottery points towards a low status rural settlement in the immediate area. The geophysical survey suggests that approximately half of one of the enclosures may survive in an area beyond the current boundary of the proposed development site. Features relating to mining activity such as backfilled shafts and vents were also identified |
