Abstract:
In response to a condition on the planning permission for an extension to the dwelling at Manor Farm, 62 High Street, Meppershall, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake the archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks for the proposed rear and side extensions to the existing house. Manor Farm house is a Grade II listed building of probable mid 17th century construction. The ground level was reduced by up to 0.93m across the site, revealing a number of features, including a pit, a demolition layer and a dump layer, suggesting late medieval occupation. Several structural features, including walls and wall foundations, were also encountered, relating to previous extensions to the house, demolished 1949, and an outbuilding, demolished in the 1880s.
