Abstract:
Following a proposal by United Utilities for a development between Bowness-on-Solway and Drumburgh, Cumbria, a programme of archaeological investigation was requested by Cumbria County Archaeological Service in consultation with English Heritage. The development was to consist of improvements to wastewater treatment facilities, including the construction of new treatment works and pipeline. The work took place in an area of very high archaeological potential with numerous Scheduled Ancient Monuments associated with and including Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site. The route also runs in close proximity, and crosses, the Carlisle Navigation Canal and there are remains relating to both the prehistoric and medieval periods from the general area. Oxford Archaeology North carried out the assessment in November 2003 and the watching brief in December 2003. Part of the mitigation comprised archaeological evaluation in eleven separate areas that would be impacted upon by the proposed scheme, and the topographic survey of Site 81, identified in a desk-based assessment of the proposed works. Three trenches were placed in each of the three evaluation areas, with the trenches remaining within the constraints of the ground disturbance associated with the proposed development. The strategy, which was designed to limit the impact of the works on this internationally important monument, included the archaeological evaluation of four key points where it was envisaged that the new pipeline would either cross the line of the Wall itself, or would impact upon archaeological features associated with it. The works were carried out intermittently between February 2006 and April 2007.
