Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken to establish the ground plan of the abbey church and precinct of the former Brigettine abbey which occupied the site until the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The results of the geophysical survey enabled an interpretative plan of part of the Brigettine abbey to be proposed. The excavation of eight trenches showed the validity of many of the geophysical survey results and gave additional information about the location, layout and extent of the abbey church, and the location of a possible cloister to the south and other monastic buildings. The remains of the abbey had been subject to demolition and robbing, leaving only foundation trenches, rubble wall cores and rubble-filled robber trenches. Two inhumation burials were recorded. |
