Abstract:
On the 15th April 2013, Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit monitored works at the Church of St Germain in Bobbingworth, Essex. The proposed works were within the vestry which was located within an extension to the west end of the nave. They consisted of the removal of existing timber flooring followed by the laying of a new concrete floor. If ground reduction was required as part of the works then there was significant potential for the presence/survival of below ground archaeological remains. Upon the removal of the existing timber flooring, it became apparent that no further ground reduction would be required prior to the laying of the new floor. The removal of the timber flooring itself did not reveal anything of archaeological interest; a modern construction deposit associated with the vestry and its previous floor was revealed, this was a mid brownish grey, loose silty sand which contained modern rubble. Due to excavation not being necessary no further archaeological monitoring was required.
