Abstract:
In response to a planning application for a 50kw wind turbine on a 36m high mast at Hustyn Downs, Withiel, HE Projects Cornwall Council were commissioned to carry out an assessment of the potential impacts of the proposal, utilising desk based assessment, site inspection and viewshed analysis. Geophysical survey of the location proposed for the wind turbine and along the route for its cable connection was undertaken by GSB Prospecting. Hustyn Downs was formerly an area of elevated enclosed downland at the eastern end of St. Breock Downs, the location of a very extensive and highly visible bronze age barrow cemetery, many of whose components are scheduled monuments. From the mid 18th century until the early 19th century, these downs were increasingly enclosed for agriculture, and its barrow groups became incorporated into the newly-created fieldscape. Many have been scheduled. Although still a prominent and lightly-settled upland area, modern developments have not been absent within this landscape, as there is a large and very prominent wind farm on St. Breock Downs 2Km to the west of the proposed turbine site. No archaeological features were found during the walkover survey or the geophysical survey. It was considered that the proposed wind turbine will have some impacts on the settings of designated and undesignated heritage assets within the surrounding landscape, though these will be reduced in severity by the existence of the nearby St. Breock Downs wind farm.
