Abstract:		 Undertaken prior to redevelopment, an evaluation consisting of 17 trenches amounted to an overall area of 1265 sq m .The works showed that the level of the ground surface had been raised in recent times by as much as 2.5 m. Below this deposit of made ground surfaces of cobbles concrete and tarmac where uncovered along with the bases of brick built walls, mortar gullies and concrete pillar bases: the remains of the Duddingston and Pentland Breweries seen to occupy the development site at the beginning of the 20th centaury.
