Abstract:
In order to characterise the archaeological potential of the site of a proposed new residential development at Northumbria Close, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to undertake an archaeological field evaluation. An earthwork survey, carried out in advance of trial trenching, identified pronounced ridge and furrow earthworks in the south-eastern corner of the site, which extended northwards along the eastern boundary, reducing in clarity as they did so. The centre of the site appeared to be completely devoid of ridge and furrow cultivation, although faint traces were noted on LiDAR data on the western side of the site. Eleven trial trenches were laid out across the areas of greatest potential disturbance. The trenches revealed a layer of topsoil with an average depth of around 0.25m, over a subsoil layer of between 0.01m and 0.30m in depth. This layer, which largely sealed the natural clay, had been removed in the centre of the site. Slight traces of ridge and furrow earthworks were noted in the sections of the east - west aligned trenches in the south-eastern corner. They were not observed elsewhere on the site. Only 1 cut feature was encountered during the present project. This was a possible pit, located in the centre of the site, and which contained a late post-medieval brick fragment. No evidence for such a feature is marked on the OS mapping from the late 19th century onwards.
